Climate on the cards in Brussels

The global fight with climate change is expected to dominate the talks during the EU summit which starts in Brussels with the participation of Poland’s PM Donald Tusk today.

Among the most problematic issues to be discussed will be the level of the reduction of CO2 emissions although no binding agreements are expected to be signed.

The official aim of the 27-member bloc is the twenty percent reduction of such emissions by 2020. Several richer EU countries, the European Parliament and the European Commission have appealed, however, to increase this target to 30 percent.

Poland supported by new member states have opposed this idea. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in Brussels that the Community may agree to such ambitious plans on the condition that the remaining world countries, including the US, China and India commit to it as well. The ambitious plans may hit the countries with economies heavily dependent on coal, including Poland, the hardest – argues the minister.

This country also favors a solution in which the EC calculates its future costs for member states before deciding on such reductions.
