Housing in Taiwan

Information where to look for a flat to rent.

Renting a flat in Taiwan is not easy thing , but maybe some of our tips can help you.

Generally in Taiwan are few kinds of flats:

  • High Building (with a elevator and rather new; more expensive; high comfort)
  • Low Building (up to fifth floor, without elevator, old; cheaper; lower comfort)
  • Rooftop (usually build on the top of Low Building; electricity, water etc. shared with another floor (apartment); two kinds: new usually with very thin walls, and older with normal walls; big space; higher comport; cheaper)
  • Single Rooms (usually for students, single room with basic furniture without (or very basic) cooking facility; cheaper, lower comfort)

Price depends on location and standard:

  • High building usually more expensive, newer, higher standard with prices >12000$NT for 10 ping
  • Low Building , depends on age >10000$NT for 10 ping, possible to find renewed flats in old buildings.
  • Rooftop prices >10000$NT, new flats have good standard, popular between foreigners on budget but who want good condition, but this type of flat usually has disadvanteges such as: hot in summer, cold in winter, thick walls, share cost with other flats, not comfortable during typhoon
  • Single Rooms >5000$NT < 15000$NT

The prices for electricity, gas and water increases per unit depends on use. So sharing energy costs with other people can be expensive.

It is possible to rent bigger (more then 10 ping) and older flat without furniture for less then 15000NT.

The deposit usually is for 2 months and standard time of contract 1 year.

Source of flat ads:

Because most of landlords don't speak English, for foreigners there are 2 sources: real estate agencies and websites.

  • real estate agencies are available on almost at any street. If you decide rent a flat using agency, you need to pay fee equal to half a month rent.
  • websites in English such as: www.forumosa.com and www.tealit.com

If you speak basic Chinese or somebody can help you check flats and talk to landlord, there are more possibilities available. Each part of city has a places with flat ads. Usually these places are in pretty popular destination eg. (in XinDian big Macdonald building on BeiXin Rd.).

Also there are more website available and from real estate agencies and other.
